Bear

The Bear promotional card was issued in 2003 as part of the Magic Player Rewards program, an initiative by Wizards of the Coast designed to incentivize tournament play and reward loyal participants in their organized play circuit. Unlike standard expansion cards found in booster packs, these promotional versions were distributed to players who reached specific milestones in sanctioned events, effectively serving as a collectible token of participation in the game's evolving competitive landscape during the early 2000s.

This particular printing of Bear features artwork by Greg Staples, who was tasked with updating the aesthetic of this classic green creature. His illustration aimed to capture the visceral, primal nature of the animal within the fantasy context of Magic: The Gathering, moving away from the more simplistic illustrations found in the game's earliest sets. The card was well-received by players for its classic utility and the refined, atmospheric art style that defined much of the visual direction for promotional materials during that era.
