Where it came from
The Bear token, numbered 2 in The Brothers' War token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in November 2022. It was designed to represent the summoned creature created by specific cards within the expansion, such as Urza's Cave or other mechanics themed around the conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra. This set explored the lore of the early Magic: The Gathering timeline, reinterpreting iconic events through a modern design aesthetic.
The artwork for this token adheres to the established visual language of the set, featuring a robust, woodland-style bear consistent with the long-running tradition of green creature tokens in the game. The design emphasizes the tactile, earthy feel of the Brothers' War era, balancing the high-fantasy elements of Magic with the industrial, artifact-heavy themes central to the narrative of the set. It remains a functional piece of gameplay ephemera designed to assist players during matches.
