Where it came from
Cecil Harvey, the protagonist of Final Fantasy IV, appears here as a double-sided card reflecting his central arc from the fallen Dark Knight to the redeemed Paladin. This card was released as part of the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game, a series designed by Square Enix to translate the aesthetics and mechanics of their flagship role-playing games into a tabletop strategy format. The artwork captures the stark transition between his sorrowful armor in Baron and his eventual light-infused transformation at Mt. Ordeals.
The card utilizes the game's dual-face mechanic to illustrate the character's internal duality and evolution throughout the narrative. Illustrators involved in the series are often drawn from the pool of artists who have contributed to the Final Fantasy franchise over decades, maintaining a consistent visual language that resonates with long-time players. Upon its release, the card was lauded by players for its thematic accuracy, effectively condensing a foundational moment in gaming history into a functional tactical piece.
