Provenance

Where it came from

The Centaur token was released in 2012 as part of the Return to Ravnica expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These tokens are not playable cards that form part of a deck, but are instead generated by specific spells and abilities during gameplay to represent creatures currently on the battlefield.

The artwork for this specific token was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot. As a recurring collaborator with Wizards of the Coast, Briclot was tasked with capturing the rugged, tribal aesthetic of the Selesnya Conclave, one of the color-coded factions central to the Ravnica setting. The design emphasizes the naturalistic and protective themes associated with the guild, utilizing a warm, earthy color palette to differentiate it from other token types found in the set.
