Provenance

Where it came from

The Centaur card released as part of the 2012 Judge Gift program is a promotional foil version of the creature card originally featured in the Magic: The Gathering core sets. These cards were distributed exclusively to Level 2 and higher certified judges as a token of appreciation for their volunteer service in officiating tournaments. The initiative served to reward the community members who maintained the integrity and logistical operations of the game, while simultaneously providing them with highly collectible, unique versions of classic game pieces.

This specific printing features updated, exclusive artwork by artist Greg Staples. Staples aimed to capture a more grounded, textured aesthetic for the creature, moving away from the typical high-fantasy gloss to emphasize the rugged, mythological nature of the Centaur. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the community for its distinctive foil finish and the rarity afforded by its limited distribution, cementing its status as a sought-after piece for those focused on the intersection of competitive play and visual artistry.
