Provenance

Where it came from

Nevinyrral's Disk first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Christopher Rush. The card is named after 'Lary Nevin,' a clever reversal of the author Larry Niven, whose short story 'The Magic Goes Away' inspired the card's theme of a board-sweeping magical artifact. It remains one of the most iconic utility cards in the game's history, known for its ability to clear the battlefield of all permanents, an effect that has been mechanically refined but never fully replaced.

The International Collectors' Edition version, released in 1993, was intended as a non-tournament-legal display set for international markets. Featuring a gold-bordered back and square corners, these cards were created to give players a way to own high-value, rare cards for casual play. While the art remains identical to the original printings, the border and back make them easily distinguishable from standard game pieces, serving as a distinct chapter in the early archival history of the game.
