Provenance

Where it came from

Conversion was released as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, the inaugural core set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce a fantasy-themed strategic card game that combined elements of traditional board games with a novel deck-building mechanic. The card itself reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic of the early 1990s, featuring artwork that emphasizes the game's core color-pie mechanics.

The card's design serves as an early example of color-shifting mechanics, allowing players to manipulate the battlefield by changing the colors of specific permanents. The illustration, created by artist Quinton Hoover, follows the distinct, often surreal style that characterized many cards from the Alpha set. While the card is generally considered a niche utility piece in the broader context of competitive play, it remains a significant artifact for historians of the game due to its rarity and its place in the original 295-card base set.
