Where it came from
Smothering Tithe was originally introduced in the 2019 set Ravnica Allegiance, where it quickly became a staple in the Commander format due to its ability to punish opponents for drawing cards. The Enchanting Tales version is a special bonus sheet printing featured in the 2023 set Wilds of Eldraine, designed to bring high-demand enchantment cards to players with updated, thematic artwork that reflects the whimsical, fairy-tale aesthetic of the Eldraine plane.
This particular printing features stylized, illustrative artwork that departs from the traditional realism seen in earlier Magic: The Gathering sets, leaning instead into a storybook visual language. The design focuses on the core concept of the card—taxing opponents for their resources—by depicting the oppressive, magical nature of the tithe within the context of Eldraine's high-fantasy setting. It was received positively by the player base, specifically those who prioritize visual cohesion in their deck-building.
