Provenance

Where it came from

Demonic Tutor was first introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a centerpiece of the Black color's mechanical identity. The card allows a player to search their library for any single card, a powerful utility that has remained a staple in the game's competitive history. The original artwork was illustrated by Douglas Shuler, whose depiction of a shadowed, hooded figure reaching into the void captured the dark, occult aesthetic that defined the game's early visual language.

The Collectors' Edition version was released by Wizards of the Coast in late 1993 as a non-tournament-legal boxed set intended for collectors. Unlike the standard game pieces, these cards feature square corners and a gold-foil stamp on the reverse side. This printing was produced to give players access to the artwork and history of the core set cards that had become difficult to acquire shortly after their initial release. While they were not permitted in sanctioned tournament play, these cards are highly valued today for their distinct aesthetics and their role as a preserved snapshot of the game’s first year.
