Where it came from
Demonic Tutor was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set as one of the most powerful cards in Magic: The Gathering history. Its function, allowing a player to search their deck for any card, made it a cornerstone of black-aligned strategy. The 2020 Judge Gift version was created as part of an exclusive promotional series distributed to certified judges by Wizards of the Coast as a token of appreciation for their service in officiating tournament play.
This specific iteration features new artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a celebrated illustrator known for her elegant and high-fantasy aesthetic. Villeneuve's interpretation shifts the card away from its original dark, gritty aesthetic toward a more refined and regal depiction of the tutor figure. The card has been widely lauded by collectors for its artistic quality and remains a coveted piece within the competitive gaming community due to both its utility and its status as a limited-run promotional item.
