Where it came from
Depala, Pilot Exemplar was first introduced in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering set Kaladesh, a plane inspired by an optimistic, magi-tech aesthetic often described as 'aetherpunk.' The character was designed to spearhead the set's new vehicle-focused mechanics, serving as a powerful legendary creature that rewards players for building decks centered around Dwarves and Pilots. The promo version, marked with the collector number 178s, features unique alternate art that distinguishes it from the standard release, highlighting the character's role as a leader within the grand innovation fairs of Ghirapur.
The illustration was created to emphasize Depala’s commanding presence and her technical expertise, blending traditional fantasy elements with the vibrant, clockwork-heavy visual language of the Kaladesh block. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast art team, the card was received warmly by the Commander community, where Depala remains a staple for those looking to build synergistic vehicle-themed decks. Its inclusion as a promotional card reflects the importance of both the character and the vehicle sub-theme to the set's overall identity.
