Provenance

Where it came from

The Dragon token, numbered 6 in the Shards of Alara set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in October 2008. These tokens were introduced to represent creatures summoned into play by specific spells or abilities, such as Broodmate Dragon, rather than existing as standalone collectible trading cards. They were included as randomized inserts in booster packs, filling a functional role in gameplay during the Alara block, which was themed around the fragmentation of a single world into five distinct shards.

The artwork for this token was provided by the illustrator Daarken, known for his dark and atmospheric fantasy style. His design aimed to capture the ferocious, predatory nature of a dragon within the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Magic: The Gathering universe. While functional cards are rarely the primary focus of art collectors, this specific token is recognized for its classic representation of the creature type during the late 2000s era of the game.
