Provenance

Where it came from

The Zombie token card was released as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering in October 2008. Designed by Wizards of the Coast to support mechanics like the Grixis shard's graveyard-focused playstyle, this token represents a creature created by various spells and abilities within the set. It was introduced to provide players with a physical representation of the Zombie creature type as it appeared in the Alara block's distinct high-fantasy aesthetic.

The illustration was crafted by artist Kev Walker, whose work is highly recognizable in the Magic: The Gathering community for its gritty, textural quality. Walker was commissioned to depict a decay-ridden, swamp-aligned creature that fits the grim color palette of the Grixis shard. The design was received as a quintessential example of modern card-game token art, celebrated for its efficiency and clear visual storytelling during fast-paced tabletop play.
