Where it came from
Evacuation was originally released as a rare card in the Urza's Destiny set in 1999, designed as a powerful blue sorcery that returns all creatures to their owners' hands. The card quickly became a staple in control-oriented decks, serving as a tactical reset button that allows players to clear the board while maintaining their own hand advantage. Its design reflects the strategic philosophy of early Magic: The Gathering, where blue was defined by its ability to manipulate the game state and disrupt creature-based strategies.
The version from Commander 2016, featuring the artwork by Kev Walker, maintains the functional identity of the original while integrating into the specialized landscape of the Commander format. Walker, a veteran illustrator for the game, opted for a dramatic, sweeping depiction of a coastal landscape being overwhelmed, reinforcing the spell's thematic sense of upheaval and retreat. This reprint was well-received by players for both its consistent mechanical utility and the fresh aesthetic treatment provided for the popular multiplayer format.
