Where it came from
Evacuation was originally released in the Urza's Saga set in 1998, serving as a powerful utility spell designed to reset the board state by returning all creatures to their owners' hands. Its mechanics reflect the high-impact, chaotic nature of late-nineties Magic: The Gathering card design, where players were encouraged to leverage instant-speed board control to disrupt opponents' momentum during critical turns.
For the Commander Masters reprint, the card received updated art by artist Jason Kang. The new illustration captures the frantic energy of a mass retreat, moving away from the more abstract or illustrative styles of the original 1990s printings. This version was selected for the set to provide Commander players with a reliable, thematic piece of blue interaction that remains a staple for controlling the pace of multiplayer games.
