Where it came from
Evacuation was first introduced in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, designed as a powerful blue instant that allows players to return all creatures to their owners' hands. The card reflects the high-impact, chaotic utility common in the Urza block, where mechanics often focused on manipulating the board state and tempo. Its design intent was to provide control-oriented players with a sweeping defensive measure against aggressive creature-based strategies.
The Seventh Edition printing, which features the card with collector number 72★, was part of the first modern core set to include a foil border treatment. The illustration by Greg Staples maintains the classic aesthetic of the original, depicting a sense of sudden displacement that complements the card's function. While the card has seen various reprints, this specific core set version remains a staple for collectors who appreciate the foundational aesthetics of late-90s and early-2000s Magic: The Gathering card design.
