Where it came from
Fauna Shaman was released in July 2010 as part of the Magic 2011 core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a thematic successor to the iconic 'Survival of the Fittest' card, allowing players to trade creatures from their hand for specific threats in their deck. This functionality made it a staple in green-aligned decks that relied on finding utility creatures at the right moment.
The card features artwork by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific illustrator known for his distinctively textured, high-fantasy style. His depiction of the shaman emphasizes a deep, primal connection to nature, fitting the set's broader goal of revitalizing traditional creature-based archetypes. Upon release, the card was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency and was widely considered a key engine card during its time in the Standard tournament format.
