Where it came from
Fauna Shaman was originally introduced in the 2010 Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2011. The card was designed as a green creature that mirrors the functionality of the iconic card Survival of the Fittest, allowing players to discard creature cards to tutor for specific threats. It emerged during a period when Wizards of the Coast was looking to provide more strategic utility for green decks, focusing on graveyard interaction and resource management to bridge the gap between early-game setup and late-game finishers.
This specific printing, collector number 164, appeared in the 2018 Ultimate Masters set, a high-end compilation intended to celebrate the history of the game by featuring iconic cards with updated or original aesthetics. The illustration for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, who employed a vibrant, mystical style to depict the shaman's connection to nature and beast-kin. The card has been well-regarded by the community for its mechanical depth and the quality of its artwork, remaining a staple choice for players who value toolbox-style strategies in various formats.
