Where it came from
The Fish token, numbered 3 in the Commander 2021 token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021 to support gameplay mechanics within the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion decks. These tokens serve as physical markers for creatures generated during play, specifically those created by cards like 'Scurry Oak' or other effects that produce 1/1 blue Fish creatures. As part of a supplemental product, this token was designed to streamline the tabletop experience for Commander players, providing clear visual references for temporary game states.
The design of the token reflects the aesthetic direction of the Strixhaven set, emphasizing the magical, scholarly theme of the plane of Arcavios. Illustrators for the token set were tasked with creating creatures that felt cohesive within the vibrant, arcane visual language of the university setting. The reception of these tokens has been generally positive among the player base, as they are valued by collectors for their utility and the consistent, high-quality artwork that Wizards of the Coast provides to differentiate their supplemental game pieces from earlier, simpler iterations.
