Where it came from
The Elephant token, numbered 13 in the Commander 2021 set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in April 2021 to accompany the expansion's preconstructed decks. These tokens were designed to represent board states created by cards like 'Call of the Herd' or similar creature-generating spells included in the 'Lorehold Legacies' and 'Prismari Performance' deck cycles. The creation of such tokens serves a functional role in gameplay, providing a physical marker for transient units that lack their own card slot within a deck.
The artistic direction for the Commander 2021 tokens focuses on high-fantasy aesthetics that harmonize with the specific themes of the Strixhaven: School of Mages setting. Illustrators for this set were tasked with creating imagery that felt robust and distinct from standard set tokens, ensuring they stood out during tabletop play. The reception of these tokens has been generally positive among the player base, as they are viewed as essential accessories for maintaining clarity during complex Commander matches.
