Where it came from
The Boar token, numbered 12 in the Commander 2021 token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in April 2021 as a supplement to the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander decks. These tokens were produced to provide physical representations of creatures summoned by specific cards within the set, such as the sorcery 'Awaken the Erstwhile' or various board-state mechanics that require players to track auxiliary units on the battlefield during games of Magic: The Gathering.
The artwork for this particular token follows the thematic aesthetic established for the Strixhaven release, utilizing a digitally rendered style that emphasizes the rugged, creature-focused nature of the Boar. The design was crafted by the Wizards of the Coast art department to be visually distinct from other token types, ensuring clarity for players during active gameplay. While tokens are standard functional game pieces rather than artistic centerpieces, they are collected as part of complete set checklists by players who prioritize maintaining original, matching components for their decks.
