Eldrazi

The Eldrazi token, marked as collector number 1 in the Commander 2021 token set, represents the cosmic, reality-warping entities central to the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. These tokens were produced to accompany specific deck archetypes within the 2021 Commander releases, providing physical representations for battlefield effects generated by various cards that summon these iconic spawns or drones. The design draws heavily from the Lovecraftian aesthetic established during the original Rise of the Eldrazi expansion, prioritizing unsettling, alien morphology to visually communicate their role as incomprehensible threats to the game's planar settings.

The artistic direction for these tokens emphasizes the 'colorless' identity of the Eldrazi faction, utilizing muted palettes and abstract, jagged silhouettes that contrast sharply with the more traditional creatures of the game. By maintaining a consistent visual language across various sets, the illustrators aimed to ensure that even temporary tokens felt like essential components of the Eldrazi narrative arc. Upon their release, they were widely appreciated by players for their utility and the way they reinforced the cohesive, otherworldly theme of the decks they were designed to support.
