Where it came from
The Frog Lizard token was released in 2015 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Commander 2015 product line. It was designed specifically to represent a creature type generated by the card 'Gitrog Monster' and similar effects, serving as a physical placeholder for players during gameplay. The token was intended to streamline complex board states, allowing players to easily track power, toughness, and status effects during the fast-paced, social multiplayer format for which the set was designed.
The artwork features a distinctive, swamp-dwelling amphibian design that aligns with the Golgari-themed aesthetics of the Commander 2015 decks. The illustration was created by Wizards of the Coast's internal art department to maintain visual continuity across the set’s tokens. Upon release, it was well-received by the player community for its thematic resonance with the set's graveyard-centric mechanics and its clear, utilitarian layout that remains a standard for token design in the game.
