Provenance

Where it came from

The Insect token, numbered 17 in the Commander 2021 set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in April 2021. These tokens were designed to support the mechanics of the Prismari Performance and Witherbloom Witchcraft preconstructed decks, specifically providing creatures for spells and abilities that generate swarm-based board states. The token was intended to serve as a functional play-aid for players participating in the Commander format, which prioritizes social, multiplayer gameplay.

The visual design of the token follows the established aesthetic of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, which featured a magical university theme. The art direction emphasizes a naturalistic yet mystical depiction of insects, consistent with the green-aligned biology curriculum of the Witherbloom College. As a utilitarian accessory produced for wide distribution, the piece was received primarily for its practical role in organized play rather than as a standalone artistic collectible.
