Provenance

Where it came from

The Insect token, identified as collector number 17, was released in 2024 as part of the ancillary token set for the Murders at Karlov Manor Commander decks. These tokens were produced by Wizards of the Coast to support specific mechanics and card interactions within the set, which drew heavy inspiration from classic detective fiction and the atmospheric, investigative tropes associated with the plane of Ravnica.

The visual design of this token reflects the set's aesthetic, which leans into a noir-inflected, gothic urban environment. The illustration was created to represent the swarm-based creature generation found on various cards within the Commander decks, maintaining the distinct stylistic continuity of modern Magic: The Gathering art direction while ensuring the token remains easily identifiable during high-stakes gameplay.
