Where it came from
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Art Series was released by Wizards of the Coast as part of a crossover promotion within the Secret Lair series, merging the aesthetic of the iconic comic book franchise with the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. This specific card, Island, was produced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the TMNT property, blending the tactical nature of a collectible trading card game with the gritty, illustrative style synonymous with the original Mirage Studios source material.
The artistic direction for this series sought to capture the distinct kinetic energy of the turtles by commissioning artists to reinterpret classic landscapes through the lens of the sewers and rooftops of New York City. The design approach focuses on environmental storytelling, utilizing the iconic Island frame to house the signature subterranean settings found in the series, and it was received as a nostalgic fusion piece that appeals to both dedicated card players and long-time fans of the comic franchise.
