Island // Island

The Island card from the Strixhaven Art Series, numbered 49, was released in 2021 as part of a specialized promotional set intended to highlight the visual aesthetic of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Strixhaven: School of Mages. Unlike standard game cards, these pieces were designed primarily as collector items, featuring full-art illustrations without the traditional text boxes or frame elements that define playable cards. They were distributed in collector boosters, serving as a tribute to the card game's rich history of high-fantasy landscape illustration.

The artwork for this specific Island was created by the artist Jungah Yoon, whose contribution captures the magical academic setting of the plane of Arcavios. Yoon's design emphasizes the serene, ethereal beauty associated with the game's blue mana sources, leaning into the mystical atmosphere of the Strixhaven campus. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the collecting community for its minimalist, gallery-style presentation, which elevated the status of basic land illustrations from functional game pieces to standalone works of fine art.
