Where it came from
Platinum Angel was originally designed for the Mirrodin expansion in 2003, conceived by the Wizards of the Coast design team to introduce a rule-bending card that prevents a player from losing the game. Its inclusion in The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts set serves as a historical homage to the mechanical themes of early Magic: The Gathering, specifically celebrating the aesthetic of the game's artifact-heavy past through a stylized, vintage frame.
The art for this specific printing retains the iconic imagery of a celestial construct, designed to evoke a sense of imposing, divine artifice. These retro-frame versions were created as part of a recurring initiative to reissue powerful or historically significant cards with their original card-face aesthetics, a move that has been widely praised by long-term players and collectors who value the nostalgia of early-era card design.
