Where it came from
Krosan Grip was released in the 2006 Magic: The Gathering set Time Spiral. Designed as an uncommon instant, it introduced the 'split second' keyword, a mechanic that prevents players from casting spells or activating non-mana abilities while the card is on the stack. The card is set in the Krosan Forest on the plane of Dominaria, a location central to the game's early narrative, and it serves as a powerful utility tool for destroying artifacts and enchantments.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Brian Sndur. The illustration depicts a massive, verdant claw emerging from the earth to crush a mechanical contraption, visually reinforcing the card's theme of nature reclaiming technology. Upon its release, Krosan Grip was immediately recognized by the competitive community for its unique ability to bypass counterspells and protective triggers, establishing it as a staple in various formats, including Commander, where it remains a highly regarded answer to problematic permanents.
