Where it came from
Land Tax was originally introduced in the 1994 Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Brian Tinsman and illustrated by Anson Maddocks. The card was conceived as a white-aligned utility engine, intended to help players recover from mana screw by allowing them to search their library for basic lands when their opponent controlled more. Its design reflected the set's broader theme of powerful, non-standard mechanical interactions that would eventually shape the game's competitive landscape.
The version appearing in The List, indexed as BBD-94, reflects the card's enduring legacy within the game's history. While the original Legends printing is prized by collectors for its scarcity, this inclusion in The List serves as a curated retrospective, making the card accessible to modern players. It remains a staple in Commander formats, noted for its efficiency and the distinct, moody aesthetic of Maddocks' early-era illustrations.
