Provenance

Where it came from

Land Tax was originally introduced in the 1994 Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed to allow white decks to search for plains cards when an opponent controlled more lands. The Pro Tour Collector Set version, released in 1997, was a special commemorative boxed set that replicated the deck lists used by top players during the inaugural Pro Tour season, providing players with a way to obtain tournament-staple cards with a distinct gold-bordered frame.

The artwork for this version was provided by Brian Snõddy, a frequent contributor to the game’s early aesthetic. Snõddy’s illustration depicts a stern, tax-collecting figure in a medieval setting, perfectly capturing the mechanical flavor of the card’s restrictive and bureaucratic effect. Within the competitive community, the card is widely remembered for its role in shaping early control archetypes and remains a highly recognizable piece of the game's mid-nineties design history.
