Where it came from
Land Tax was originally printed in the Legends expansion in 1994, designed by game creator Richard Garfield to serve as a powerful engine for card advantage in white decks. By allowing players to search their library for basic lands when they controlled fewer lands than an opponent, the card became a cornerstone of competitive play, balanced by the restrictive nature of its triggered ability.
The Battle Royale Box Set, released in 1999, served as a curated collection designed to introduce players to the historical rivalry between different color identities. Land Tax was selected for inclusion as number 35 in this set, featuring the original atmospheric art by Quinton Hoover. The set was marketed as a standalone boxed experience, helping newer players access staples from early sets while highlighting the strategic tension inherent in early Magic: The Gathering card design.
