Lightning Bolt

Lightning Bolt first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a foundational element of red-aligned gameplay. The card was created to provide a simple, efficient way for players to deal direct damage to either creatures or opponents, quickly becoming the gold standard for burn spells in the game's early years. By the time it was reprinted in Fourth Edition in 1995, it had already established itself as one of the most iconic and powerful cards in the Magic: The Gathering library.

The artwork for this version was provided by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most influential early illustrators. Rush's depiction of a stark, jagged bolt of energy perfectly captured the raw, destructive essence of red magic. His minimalist yet evocative style was highly regarded by players and critics alike, helping to define the visual identity of the game during its formative period.
