Lightning Bolt

Lightning Bolt was first introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a staple red spell intended to provide efficient, direct damage to creatures or players. The card quickly defined the color red's identity within the game's color pie, emphasizing speed and aggression. Its inclusion in the 1994 Revised Edition ensured its continued presence during the game's early growth, maintaining the original iconic artwork by Christopher Rush.

The design of the card is celebrated for its elegance and utility, costing only a single red mana to deal three damage. Christopher Rush’s illustration, featuring a jagged, primal burst of energy, became synonymous with the game's visual aesthetic. Revised Edition, often referred to as the 3rd Edition, featured a white border and was the last core set to include the original alpha-era artwork before later reprintings introduced updated illustrations, solidifying this version's status among purist collectors.
