Lightning Bolt

Lightning Bolt first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as one of the most efficient damage spells in the game. It was conceived as a foundational staple for the red color identity, setting the power level benchmark for direct damage cards. By the time it was included in the Magic 2011 core set, it had already attained legendary status as a definitive expression of red's explosive, aggressive philosophy.

The Magic 2011 printing features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who depicted a visceral, crackling discharge of raw arcane energy. Moeller’s interpretation leans into the kinetic intensity of the spell, moving away from the more abstract depictions found in earlier iterations. This version of the card was well-received by the player base for its clarity and the way Moeller captured the sheer, singular focus of a bolt of lightning as it strikes a target.
