Memory Lapse

Memory Lapse was first introduced in the 1995 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Homelands. The set is often noted for its thematic focus on the lore of the plane of Ulgrotha, featuring a distinct gothic horror aesthetic that diverged from the broader high-fantasy themes typical of the game's early sets. As a common card within the set, it was intended to provide blue decks with a low-cost, temporary control option, allowing players to delay an opponent's threat by placing it back on top of their library.

The artwork for the card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prolific artist whose work defined much of the early visual identity of the game. Hoover utilized his signature romantic style to capture the conceptual feeling of a character losing their hold on a specific thought or memory. While Homelands was initially met with mixed critical reception due to its perceived lower power level compared to preceding sets, the card itself became a staple in various formats over time due to its efficient mechanical design.
