What it does
Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, put it on top of its owner's library instead of into that player's graveyard.

Where it came from
Memory Lapse was first introduced in the 1995 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Homelands. The set was designed to explore the lore of the plane of Ulgrotha, focusing on themes of horror and gothic fantasy. This card, a common blue instant, was crafted to provide players with a form of tempo disruption by forcing an opponent to draw the same card again on their next turn, effectively delaying their game plan.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was known for his distinct, often surreal contributions to the game's early aesthetic. Maddocks’ design captures the unsettling, atmospheric tone prevalent in the Homelands set, emphasizing the disorientation of a forgotten moment. Upon release, the card became a staple of blue control decks and has since been recognized as a definitive piece of blue’s color pie identity, valued for its efficiency in competitive formats.
