Where it came from
Memory Lapse was originally printed as a common card in the Homelands expansion in 1995. The card’s design, which functions as a low-cost counterspell that delays an opponent's play by placing a spell on top of their library, became a staple of blue-aligned control decks. Its ability to create tempo swings while maintaining card parity has kept it a significant piece of Magic: The Gathering history for decades.
The 2002 World Championship Decks product line was created to allow players to experience the specific deck lists used by top competitors during the Magic World Championships. This version of Memory Lapse features the signature of the professional player who included it in their deck list, set against a distinct gold-bordered back. These decks were intended for casual play rather than tournament use, serving as a snapshot of the competitive meta-game during the early 2000s.
