Where it came from
Necrotic Wound was originally introduced in the Guilds of Ravnica set in 2018, designed as a black-aligned removal spell that scales in effectiveness based on the number of creature cards in the player's graveyard. Its inclusion in Jumpstart 2022 as card number 447 reflects the reprint philosophy of the Jumpstart series, which curates themed decks meant to provide a quick, accessible play experience for both new and veteran players of Magic: The Gathering.
The card’s artwork, illustrated by artist Igor Kieryluk, leans into the visceral, macabre aesthetic associated with the Golgari Swarm, the faction on Ravnica that utilizes decay and recycling as core mechanics. By depicting the literal corruption of life energy, the design effectively communicates its mechanical function of exiling an opponent's creature as a cost paid in graveyard resources. The piece was well-received for its clear visual storytelling and its utility as a reliable, low-mana interaction tool in competitive formats.
