Island

The Island card, numbered 102 from the Jumpstart 2022 set, is a fundamental component of a product line designed to facilitate quick, accessible gameplay without the need for traditional deck construction. Released by Wizards of the Coast in December 2022, the set introduced a mix of new cards and reprints, utilizing a unique randomized theme-pack system where players combine two packs to form a deck. This particular card was commissioned to fit the specific aesthetic themes prevalent within the Jumpstart structure, which emphasizes vibrant, varied art styles to distinguish between different deck archetypes.

The artwork for this specific iteration was illustrated by artist Dominik Mayer. Known for a highly stylized, angular, and atmospheric approach, Mayer’s contribution to the set leans into a dramatic, surreal representation of a landscape. His design intent was to move away from the traditional, realistic depictions of islands found in earlier Magic: The Gathering sets, favoring a more conceptual and sharp-edged visual language that has become a hallmark of his work within the game. It was generally well-received by the community for its distinctive look, which stands out prominently in a library of thousands of different land card illustrations.
