Orzhov Basilica

Orzhov Basilica first appeared in the original Ravnica: City of Guilds set in 2005, designed as part of a cycle of 'bounce lands' representing the ten distinct guilds of the plane. This specific printing comes from The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander series, which repurposed the classic utility land to support the multi-colored strategies prevalent in the Commander format. The card depicts the monolithic, cathedral-like architecture of the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild defined by its oppressive blend of banking and organized religion.

The design of the card focuses on the tension between its slow entry into play and its powerful efficiency in mana production. By forcing the player to return a land to their hand, the card mimics the bureaucratic and demanding nature of the Orzhov, balancing its strength against a strict tax on tempo. The aesthetic, consistent across its various reprints, emphasizes gothic spires and shadows, capturing the guild's distinct visual identity as the ultimate authority of wealth and death in the Ravnica setting.
