Platinum Angel

Platinum Angel was introduced in the 2003 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Mirrodin. Designed by Bill Rose, the card was conceptualized during a shift toward the artifact-heavy theme of the Mirrodin block, which revisited the game's focus on metallic and mechanical motifs. Its unique ability, which prevents a player from losing the game as long as the creature remains on the battlefield, was intended to create high-stakes tension and provide a defensive anchor for control-oriented strategies.

The card’s striking illustration was created by artist Brom, who is well known for his dark, atmospheric, and gothic fantasy style. Brom sought to capture a sense of stoic, otherworldly protection, rendering the angel with a distinct metallic aesthetic that echoed the artificial nature of the plane of Mirrodin. Upon release, the card was widely discussed for its rules-text implications and became a staple in various casual and competitive formats for its ability to fundamentally alter the win-loss conditions of a match.
