Where it came from
Platinum Angel was originally introduced in the 2003 Mirrodin expansion, designed by Wizards of the Coast to feature a unique, game-altering static ability that prevents the controller from losing the game. The card quickly became a staple of casual and combo-oriented Magic: The Gathering play due to its distinctive and memorable rules text, which forced players to find specific removal spells to overcome its presence on the board.
This specific iteration, numbered 41 in The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts subset, was released in 2022 to commemorate the game's history. It utilizes the classic frame design associated with older sets, blending original artistic motifs with modern card formatting. The illustration maintains the ethereal, metallic aesthetic established by the original artist, Greg Staples, and was released as part of a special bonus sheet intended to evoke nostalgia for long-time players.
