Where it came from
Platinum Angel was originally introduced in the 2003 Mirrodin expansion, designed to test the boundaries of Magic: The Gathering's ruleset by granting the player a state-based immunity to defeat. The card became a staple of casual and combo-oriented play, frequently appearing in decks built to protect the creature through indestructible effects or hexproof mechanics, thereby forcing opponents to find specific removal before they could secure a win.
This specific version originates from The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts subset, released in 2022. The design mimics the classic border aesthetic of the game's earliest iterations, serving as a nostalgic tribute to the artifact-heavy themes of the Urza and Mishra storyline. The illustration by Greg Staples reimagines the celestial construct with a polished, high-fantasy aesthetic that aligns with the set's historical narrative while retaining the iconic, game-altering presence of the original design.
