Power Sink

Power Sink was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a versatile blue instant. It was created to provide control players with a flexible way to counter spells, allowing the caster to drain an opponent's remaining mana while simultaneously nullifying their attempted play. The mechanic reflected the early design philosophy of the game, which placed a high value on mana management and interaction during the stack phase.

The Sixth Edition version, released in 1999, featured updated rules text and the modern card frame that had begun to standardize the game's aesthetic. The illustration by Christopher Rush, which depicts a whirlpool of magical energy, became iconic for its stark, clean look. By this stage in the game's life, the card was widely recognized as a staple of blue-aligned control decks, prized for its strategic depth and the psychological pressure it placed on opponents.
