Power Sink

Power Sink was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the inaugural print run of Magic: The Gathering by Wizards of the Coast. Created by Richard Garfield, the game emerged from a desire to develop a portable, strategic card game that could be played quickly between rounds of other tabletop sessions. Power Sink was designed as a blue instant spell, reflecting the color’s identity of control and mana manipulation, allowing players to force their opponents to tap out their remaining mana or lose the spell being cast.

The artwork for the card was provided by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic early contributors to the game’s aesthetic. Rush’s design for Power Sink captures a sense of arcane drain through a simple, effective visual motif characteristic of the era’s hand-painted style. While it remains a staple of early Magic history, it was received primarily as a functional utility card, helping to cement the tactical depth of counter-magic that defined the game's competitive landscape during its formative years.
