Power Sink

Power Sink was originally printed in the Mirage expansion, released in October 1996 as the first set designed to function as a standalone drafting environment. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Mirage introduced the 'Phasing' mechanic and focused on a lush, tropical aesthetic that shifted away from the gritty, disjointed art styles of early Magic: The Gathering sets. As a counter-spell variant, Power Sink was intended to provide blue decks with a flexible tool for resource management, forcing opponents to commit their mana or lose the ability to cast their spells entirely.

The card's original illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a foundational figure in the game's early visual history. Rush’s design for Power Sink utilized his signature high-contrast style to depict the magical drain of energy, fitting the atmospheric narrative of the Mirage setting. The card became a staple of control strategies throughout the late nineties, celebrated by players for its tactical versatility in punishing opponents who tapped out prematurely during their own turns.
