Relentless Rats

Relentless Rats debuted in the 2004 Magic: The Gathering expansion Fifth Dawn, a set centered on the mechanical theme of artifacts and the lingering influence of the plane of Mirrodin. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team, the card was created to break the traditional deck-building rule that limits players to four copies of any single card, allowing players to include any number of copies in their decks. This unique ability fundamentally altered the card's function, shifting it from a standard creature to a deck-building engine that scales in power based on the volume of copies fielded.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Kev Walker, who utilized a grim, visceral aesthetic to depict the swarm-like nature of the creature. By emphasizing tangled forms and overwhelming numbers, Walker's design communicated the card's mechanical identity—strength in unity and repetition—at a glance.
