Serra Angel

Serra Angel first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a quintessential white creature that embodied both offensive and defensive capabilities through its flying and vigilance abilities. As the game evolved, the card became a staple of the franchise, representing the iconic aesthetic of the Serra plane and its inhabitants. The artwork on this specific 2016 Welcome Deck version features a modern interpretation that retains the classic angelic imagery while aligning with the cleaner, more digital art style prevalent in contemporary Magic releases.

This particular printing was issued as part of the 2016 Welcome Deck series, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to introduce new players to the game mechanics and lore. By including such a foundational card in an entry-level set, the designers aimed to provide novices with a recognizable and powerful creature that effectively demonstrates key gameplay concepts. It was received as a helpful teaching tool, serving as a reliable and balanced inclusion for beginners learning the fundamentals of deck construction and combat strategy.
