Where it came from
Serra Angel was introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, quickly becoming one of the most iconic creatures in the game. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to be a powerful, high-cost flying threat that embodied the white mana color identity of protection and vigilance. The original artwork by Douglas Shuler set a standard for the game's early fantasy aesthetic, depicting the angel in a serene but formidable pose that resonated with players.
The Collectors' Edition version, released in 1993, was a non-tournament-legal boxed set intended for collectors rather than competitive play. Featuring square corners and gold-stamped backs, these cards were created to allow players to own complete sets of the original game pieces that were otherwise becoming difficult to acquire. While they are distinct from the standard game cards due to their specific backing and lack of tournament legality, they remain a significant piece of Magic history for those who value the preservation of the game's formative sets.
